How to Convert a Video Clip to an Image: Step by Step

A video clip holds a lot of potential still images. Here is how to pick the one you want and convert it to a standalone image file in minutes.

The Difference Between a Clip and a Full Video

The process of extracting a frame is the same whether you are working with a 10 second clip or a full two hour recording. The tool loads the file, lets you navigate frame by frame, and captures the one you select. Shorter clips are just faster to scrub through.

If you have a long recording and already know the approximate timestamp you want, you can use the timeline slider to jump directly to that section rather than scrolling through from the beginning.

Step by Step Process

Step 1: Open the tool

Go to Photo from Video in your browser.

Step 2: Load your clip

Drag your video file onto the drop zone or click the Browse button to find it on your device. The clip loads into the preview player.

Step 3: Navigate to the right frame

Use the timeline slider to get close to the frame you want. Switch to the Previous Frame and Next Frame buttons for precise control once you are in the right area.

Step 4: Capture the frame

When the frame you want is showing in the preview, click Capture Current Frame. The image appears in the Captured Frames panel.

Step 5: Download your image

Click the download icon on the captured frame. The image saves as a JPG to your device.

What If I Need Multiple Images from the Same Clip

Capture as many frames as you want during the session. They accumulate in the Captured Frames panel. When you are done, use the Download All button to get all of them as a ZIP file in one step. This is useful when you need comparison images from the same clip or want to capture a sequence of moments.

For a guide specifically on this workflow, see how to extract multiple frames from a video at once.

Image Quality

The extracted image matches the resolution of the original clip. A 1080p clip gives you 1920 by 1080 images. The output is a JPG file, which balances quality and file size well for most use cases. Does the File Need to Be a Certain Format

No format conversion is required. Load your clip as is, whether it is MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, or another common format. The tool handles the decoding automatically.

Try it at Photo from Video. Load your clip, grab the frame, and download the image in under two minutes.
